BEYOND THE BRUSH:
What The Hands Remember
A documentary film series and multimedia project exploring memory, identity, migration, and the stories preserved through the act of making.
What The Hands Remember brings together six intimate short documentary films centered on South Florida artists Yochi Y. Avin, Karla Kantorovich, Marina Font, Magda Love, Aurora Molina, and Lisu Vega. Through observational filmmaking, photography, sound, and close attention to gesture and process, filmmaker and photojournalist Taimy Alvarez explores a central question:
What do our hands remember that words cannot?
Each film stands as an individual portrait while collectively examining how memory, identity, migration, inheritance, loss, and belonging become embedded in the creative process and in the materials artists touch, shape, stitch, weave, and transform.
The films were presented as part of an immersive multimedia exhibition at MAD Arts in Dania Beach from July 16 through August 2, 2026. Projected imagery, directional sound, original installations, and the artists’ works transformed the documentary series into a physical environment where audiences could experience memory through texture, movement, sound, and the rhythms of making.
The project also included Visual Storytelling for Artists, a hands-on workshop focused on helping artists use interviews, sound, composition, smartphones, and editing to tell the stories behind their work.
Although the MAD Arts exhibition has concluded, What The Hands Remember continues through film festival submissions, screenings, artist conversations, educational programming, and the development of the project into a feature-length documentary.
More than a project about art or material, What The Hands Remember is an exploration of the experiences we inherit, carry, transform, and sometimes understand only through the act of making.
