BEYOND THE BRUSH: What The Hands Remember

A documentary and multimedia project exploring memory, identity, migration, and the stories preserved through the act of making.

Presented at MAD Arts from July 16 through August 2, 2026, What The Hands Remember brought together six South Florida artists whose creative practices transform fiber, fabric, rope, photographs, and everyday materials into powerful vessels of personal and cultural memory.

Through six intimate short documentaries and an immersive multimedia exhibition, filmmaker and photojournalist Taimy Alvarez explored a central question:

What do our hands remember that words cannot?

The exhibition featured the stories and work of Yochi Y. Avin, Karla Kantorovich, Marina Font, Magda Love, Aurora Molina, and Lisu Vega. Observational filmmaking, projected imagery, directional sound, and original installations invited visitors to experience memory through gesture, texture, movement, and the rhythms of making.

The project also included Visual Storytelling for Artists, a hands-on workshop that helped artists use smartphones, interviews, sound, composition, and editing to share the stories behind their work.

Although the MAD Arts exhibition has concluded, Beyond the Brush continues. The project is expanding through documentary films, screenings, artist conversations, educational workshops, and the development of What The Hands Remember as a feature-length documentary.

This is not simply a project about art or fiber. It is an exploration of inheritance, belonging, loss, transformation, and the ways our hands carry the memories we are unable to put into words.
